How do penguins stay dry? – Did you know that some penguins stay in the water for as long as 5 months? How do they keep dry?

Items included in your kit: Paper penguin, one white crayon.

Items needed from home: Water, a spray bottle if you have one or a jar and blue food  coloring.

Week Five – How Do Penguins Stay Dry?

Color the paper penguin completely with a thick coating of the white crayon.  Fill a spray bottle with water (or use a dropper or spoon with a cup of water). Add 2-3 drops of blue food coloring to the water (optional).

Spray (or drop small amounts) the water onto the colored penguin.  Observe how the water repels off the penguin.  The wax of the crayon prevents the water from absorbing into the paper just like the wax on the penguin’s feathers repels water and helps keep the penguin warm and dry.
